William E. Elmore collection.

Abstract Collection includes correspondence, land records, legal papers, receipts, scrapbooks, postcards, and genealogical notes relating to the Whitfield, Croom, and Ficklen families. Also includes material from Civil War blockade runner Appleton Oaksmith. Material topics include Webb's Chapel Methodist Church at Sandy Bottom, N.C.; a Sandy Bottom narrative that describes rural life in the 1930s, student life at East Carolina Teachers Training School, and life in southern Florida; the Farmers Alliance; Nathan B. Whitfield's campaign for the North Carolina State Senate; destruction by Union soldiers; Peter Stuart Ney; prohibition; the 1868 North Carolina Constitution; Carolina Christian College; Atlantic Christian College; Aries Book Club in Greenville, N.C.; and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Wilson, N.C; Also included are printed materials regarding Greenville, N.C., which include programs for events and the constitution and by-laws (1933) for the Greenville Tobacco Board of Trade. Other miscellaneous materials belong to the Jordan, Waters, Meeks, Outlaw, Thompson, and Cox families.

Biographical noteWilliam Everett "Mickey" Elmore was born December 11, 1944, in Kinston, North Carolina, to Raymond Rouse Elmore and Gertrude "Trudie" Elizabeth Croom Elmore. He graduated from Grainger High School in 1963 and attended East Carolina College in Greenville, North Carolina. He stayed in Greenville and worked for Carolina Telephone (later Sprint) for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1999. On May 20, 1973, Mickey Elmore married Martha Gay Little of Richmond, Virginia.
